Si Xiang Qi - Nostalgic Restaurant in Hualien

Among a myriad of concrete buildings along Datong Street in Hualien City, an old house from the Japanese rule stands out, projecting an atmosphere of elegance and tranquility. People stop by for the well looked-after garden and the aroma of coffee. The garden-like restaurant named “Si Xiang Qi (nostalgia)” is an oasis in the desert of city life. An archaic touch is added to the exterior and name of the restaurant. On the other hand, its interior design exhibits aesthetics that combines new and old. The restaurant owner, Chen Jhih-wei, was an advertising publisher. Slightly more than 10 years ago, he returned to his hometown to start all over with Cantonese patisserie, adding one more item to the basket of Hualien specialties. Lately, Chen launched “Hualien Meal,” which is the indigenous food and served in delicate plates. Further surrounded by an artistic atmosphere makes the food and dining here a much more enjoyable experience. The whole course of Hualien Meal includes bamboo rice, grilled fish wrapped in lotus leaves, mixed grill, salty chicken, stir-fried anchovy and nest fern, clam and fish soup, and cooked taro and sweet potato for dessert and sweet glutinous rice wine to the finish. The bamboo rice is made of glutinous rice, which is exclusively available in Fuli Township, Hualien, along with leaves of laurel cherry stuffed in Makino bamboo tubes.
The restaurant also offers coffee and tea, and the quality and aesthetics of food are accentuated. Come to enjoy the food and relax. This is the right place for family and friends getting together, chit-chatting and tasting the indigenous cuisine.
